Stop Shaming Support Workers. Why We Are Important.

Good evening everyone. How are you all doing tonight? A while back I started working back in the care sector. One day in particular or more so a comment stuck out. A woman who doesn’t know me simply called me and I quote ‘an overpaid arse wiper’. She has asked me about my job.

This woman has clearly never needed the help of support work. Never pushed a wheelchair or held someones hand as they break down. And I hope she never needs us. The work a support worker does is invaluable in many ways other than just PC. (PC means personal care)

Allow me to break down what we do.

  • We protect people’s dignity. So yes that means full PC support if they require the aid or prompting. (We can shower ourselves with ease they may find it difficult) Sometimes it can be messy but we always do what we can to protect the people we support.
  • Help with the care of themselves. Medication, finance and social support. Not in all cases but some if they don’t have the capacity to do so. Capacity is the ability to make decsions for ourselves. We assist them with everyday tasks and always offer encouragememt. Things that people take for granted.
  • Support workers are sometimes the ONLY people our services see. And sometimes the only reason they have a social life.
  • We fill the void in our services lives. We become a family extension in a way. Why? Let me put this simply……..some families and friends don’t care. They cut contact with the service user. Not all families/friends do this but enough do. And that can be very difficult to deal with. It leaves them upset, confused and hurt. And we as support workers slowly become that family. We also take the anger and confusion that can be thrown at us to.
  • We support workers at times can deal with serious mental health problems, conditions and other health problems. From dealing with emotional break downs, seizures, falls, all the way to physical violence. (Thats a rare case but it can happen) Staff support each other and also try to defuse and calm any situation quickly for the protection of our service’s.
  • We face challenges. Communicating with someone who is non verbal, a person with no capacity or a person who refuses to eat. Each challenge is difficult but we work towards them in a way that helps our service.
  • We aid in making calls for appointments. Doctors, dentists etc. At the same time we monitor our service’s health. Basically checking a wound, eating habits and flagging things up that might be a cause for concern. For exmaple, a service who has a mixed relationship with food suddenly stops eating. It could be that they’re ill, it might be something more serious or they may have a history of an eating disorder. We raise these issues and then find ways a working round them. Encouraging to eat smaller amounts of food at regular intervals, perhaps liquizading their food or more fatty foods.
  • We constantly have to know what’s going on around us when with a service. We have to be aware of everything. Can that car horn cause aniexty? How can I reduce the stress of any changes made to their daily routine? Can not go in their cause of the light’s. It triggers their seizure’s! These are just some of the thought’s that we can have. Each one will be difficult depending on the service’s individual needs.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of some of the things we do. Support workers give emotional, physical, mental and social support on a daily basis. We are more than just ‘arse wipers’ we do so much more than that. We help people. We aid people. We support people whom many forget about. We encourage individuality and confidence whenever we can.

It’s a joy to be a support worker. It is difficult and stressful. But damn is it rewarding.

Shop Is Open! And Youtube!

Hello my lovelies. How are you all today? Hope your all ready for the weekend! It’s certainly been a very busy week for me. So many things have been happening and I finally feel like things are moving in the right direction. Plans and dreams that I’ve had for years have finally had their seeds planted!

Some of you may know that I’ve been wanting to open a shop for a long time now and I finally done it!! I’m so happy and excited to announce that I now have an Etsy shop!

And here is a link to that shop. My Etsy Shop

20171019_144544
My button coin purse. Hand made and hand stitched.

I love this button coin purse. It was easy to make and it was very pleasing to finally use some of the fabric that I’ve been accumulating over the last year or two for something. I much prefer the rounded corners than the shape ones. (Made that mistake with my first one!) I’m hoping to get better with sewing zips on and more complex embroidery. 🙂

The shop contains some other hand made pieces and one painting. I hope to get more stock in in the coming weeks and hope you all enjoy. Having this shop is giving me a great little push that I need to be more creative and gain more skill in hand embroidery. Keep an eye out for more work to come. I have some exciting things in store and can not wait to share them all with you.

Now onto the second part. My Youtube Channel

Since blogging I’ve always had a growing interest in youtube or vlogging. And after much debate with myself I realized that I didn’t have anything too loose and went for it. I’ve only got a few videos up and still have much to learn/get. Such as editing equipment, an sd card that will work with my camera (it’s an older model but works perfectly) and some decent lighting. But that will all come in time but for now I’m really enjoying it.

I hope you enjoy and until next time my lovelies.

Sketchbook Tour.

Hello everyone. This little post is gonna be a tour of some of my most recent drawings and doodles. Hope you enjoy.

Red mushrooms.
These little mushrooms have been done with a pencil outline and filled in with my Touch marker pens. A little autumn inspo for inktober. (Which I’m failing at, but hay I’m working again!!) These little mushrooms are just too cute and I needed the push to get me back in my sketchbook.

The moon.
This little moon piece turned out really well. All drawn in black pen (which I rarely do!!) And I really enjoyed the process. It was fun and something that I need to do more of. One of my favourite pieces.

Piggies.

These where a prompt for my personal challenge. Pigs. Very awkward to draw but the one at the bottom is the best. Lol. These are drawn in one of my smaller sketchbooks that sometimes comes out with me. Drawing in pen isn’t easy but again something that I aim to be more confident in.

Yellow mushrooms.

Again with the mushrooms. Glad I found some inspiration though. I used a reference for these and the red ones from google. Used a pencil outline and tried the Touch markers again. You can see the bleeding from the ink. But despite that I do love this one. Its not something I usually draw, but simple and adorable. Yip, just called a mushroom adorable.

Eggs. Dragon? Not sure.
Done these in my good old friend, coloured pencil. The blue one was more of a challenge for the shading and range of tones. But did a good job over all. These two are more than likely going to be re-drawned at a later stage.

What do you guys think? Are you involved with inktober?

Until next time my lovelies.

Lipstick Photo Dairy

Makeup Revolution Noble

Hello everyone. How are you all today. The weather is struggling to make up its mind in what it wants to do today. Today I have a small collection of some lippies that I have been loving or fell back in love with. The first pic is me wearing Makeup Revolution’s Lip Kit in Noble. Love the nude shade and the creamy texture of the liquid lipstick.

Lipsense Napa x3 and Strawberry Shortcake
I was wearing a lip colour combo here. Lipsense colours Napa and a little of Strawberry Shortcake to give it the pink tint.

Lipsense Strawberry Shortcake

Makeup Revolution’s No Perfection Yet
The one above was just Strawberry Shortcake x3. A very lovely pinky red colour that came as a nice surprise. Not to in your face but still noticable. I was wearing Makeup Revolution’s ‘No Perfection Yet’ one of my growing fave’s!!

Kiko cosmetics.
Look at that smile! I’m wearing Kiko here but dabbed on instead of building up on the colour. This one was found in one of the many boxes that still need sorted!!

Such a pretty colour!!!

Hope you all enjoyed and until next time!

A cute Pastel Elixir Haul

Good morning everyone! Today is a very exciting day……I just got my order from Pastel Elixir and I am beyond pleased and excited. Let’s be real, I’m actually sitting trying hard not to squeal. And this is why:

Pastel Elixir Goodies

I did also get a cute mug but got that the other day. Ellis did not it to damage any of the prints. The mind behind Pastel Elixir is a lovely young woman called Ellis Woolley. And she is lovely and answers any questions to the best of her ability. She also has youtube’s. Even better to put a face to the name!!

The create print and Pastel Elixir buisiness card.

How cute are these. Before I continue Ellis does have a sale going on, check it out for some cute stuff. I love the ‘Create’ print. As an creative person this is something I just can’t resist, plus the doodles are adorable. The simple design for her buisness card is flawless. Simple yet effective.

My Squirrel Mug by Pastel Elixir.
You may have already seen this on my insta if you follow me there. This mug is just perfect for the new season and I love the forage detail too. While it is smaller than my other mugs, its great for getting used to soya milk.

Unicorn print, cupcake post card and the monster card

These are great. The moster card was a must. Not sure who will get it but may just keep it cause it’s adorable. The unicorn ‘Believe In Yourself’ print is a great buy. It’s a great little reminder to stay confident and that I got this. 😍

Pastel Elixir buisiness info
This is the info for Pastel Elixir if your interested. Ellis is a lovely person and we both share a keen love for supporting small buisinesses. From her beautiful stickers, badges to the mugs and prints. This is one shop I defo plan on visiting again.

Until next time.

Why My Pet’s are Encourgaing Me To Have a More Vegan Mindset

(Disclaimer. Pet owners please be advised that some info in this post is distressing and graphic. While no video footage is used or linked please be aware this is to address a real issue. Thank you for your support and hopefully we can stop this.)

My babies. Maxie and Damos. Xx

Wow that’s a long title. But it’s true. If you don’t already know I have 2 playful chinchilla’s. And these guys although small have become a major part of my life. With big personalities and adorable moments that make you make to just say ‘awwww’ every few minutes. These guys have changed my viewing on alot of things.

This blog post is not pissing on anyone who does buy brands who do test on animals. Your money, your choice guys.

Makeup Brands. I refuse to buy any brands that test on animals or are involved with a third party that does. Sorry Mac and Nars this northern gal aint gonna be a customer. For me supporting a brand that does I wouldn’t deserve the 2 floofers in my life. So I am be buying more animal friendly products. Vegan products. And that is fine with me. There are so many brands who do NOT test on animals that don’t get the limelight like they should. Body Shop, Kiko, Sheersense and Lush to name a few. If in doubt look for the bunny logo which is only allowed to used by brands that 100% do NOT use or test on animals.

Buying fur. Never. Never will I buy real fur. I had always been against the fur trade which is illegal in some parts but now more than ever. Just no. After watching a video where animals such as foxes and badgers etc died from elctrotuction and gas I already felt sick. Then it turned to chinchillas. They broke their necks. They killed them while the tiny animal struggled to break free. And thats when I lost it. I cried so damn much! All for the damn fur trade!!

If you really want fur buy faux fur and don’t be afraid too double check that is in fact fake fur. You can do this by spreading the hair fibres apart and seeing if the fibres are stitched into the fabric. You will see all the stitching. If they are its fake, if it looks like skin, then leave it. Or if in doubt leave it on the shelf.

Am I going Vegan? Well I’m making some life changes. Slowly. Being a vegan is a huge step forward for me so I’m going to learn more first. It’s not a desicion I want to make lightly. While making some changes I want to learn and do research so I can stay healthy. Any advice would be fab guys!!!

Damos. Not sure if he wants to jump or relax!!
My boys have really opened my eyes to many things and these things make me angry and uncomfortable. So I want to raise awareness about animal cruelty by supporting animal friendly brands, sharing photos of my beautiful chins and re-educating people where needed.

Its the 21st centuary. We dont need real fur or products that are tested on animals. Get with the times brands or you’ll lose your custom.

Until next time folks.

Art Supplies I plan on Repurchasing or Getting!

Hello everyone. How are you all on this mixed afternoon? I was doing some painting yesterday and noticed that I really need to make some repurchases soon. So the painting session inspired this little post and made me notice what I need to get.

My paint brushes!

I would love to get some new paint brushes, more smaller ones for little details and a few medium sized ones. I find the larger ones harder to work with and they annoy the hell outta me for some reason. While the smaller and medium sized brushes work with me better. I have a little more control over them. Any recommendations are highly accepted right now.

Not gonna last long are they??

My system 3 paints from Daler Rowney need replacing to. Had too bin the aquamarine blue last night as it was empty!! My favourite blue! But these will defo be on the list for a repurchase. Easy (ish I’m still learning and completely out my comfort zone) to use and mix really well together. I’ve also made myself a little promise to be more brave with the mediums that I’m using as I’m normally a pencil user.

Copic Ciao Markers are something I would love to get my hands on. Only problem is that the small packs don’t have any colours I want at this moment but the larger 72 packs have all the colours I would use. But the price is something that I can not afford at the moment. (Time to save those pennies me thinks!!)

Oh more pencils too but those are always in demand in my art supply. 😅

What recommendations have you all got for me?

Until next time my lovelies.

Some Tips on Valuing Yourself

We’ve all been there where we under value ourselves. Where we beat ourself up over something or think less of ourselves. We all do it. And its just not healthy for us. So I’m recommending some tips, that have worked for me in realising my personal value.

  • Instead of seeing something as failure see it as a lesson. A learning curve, where you tried something and even though it didn’t work out the first time you learned something new through the experience. It could be a new food, or something like dancing.
  • Stop making excuses for people who aren’t worth it. These people will keep letting you down if its a regular thing. Your time is scared, use it wisely.
  • Say no, mean no and stand by that no. Don’t cave under the pressure from anyone. Doesn’t matter if it’s family, friends etc. Stick to your guns or that gut feeling. You came to that desicion and have that feeling for a reason!!
  • Second best ain’t happening! Don’t allow yourself to be treated as second best. Your the Queen (or King) of your life not a dessert or a toy to be played with.
  • Relaise that YOU are the proirity of your life. You may have kids, or someone who relies on you and they are important too but again so are you. Plus your their role model. If they see you being confident, humble and looking after yourself they will do they same.
  • And finally the last one and the most important. Be the CEO of your life. You have the power to promote, demote or fire anyone in your life. Use it. Understand your value and show people they can not undervalue you.
  • Take pride in your interests and passions. Not everyone will like them but these hobbies make you happy. Share them with others and even join groups of like minded people. Don’t allow pigeons to laugh at your mind.

I hope these little tips help or even solidify the feeling of your personal value. If anyone has anymore tips don’t be afraid to leave them in the comments. Your words of wisdom are always welcome.

Until next time my lovelies.

Why I Love Monday’s – Beating the Monday Blue’s.

Monday. The beginning of every week and for some reason is always hated. I used to hate Monday’s, despised them actually. We stumble into a Monday with wild hair, bleary eyes that can barely stay focused and a need to retreat back into the confines of our warm, loving beds.

I was the same until I started to look at it a little differently. Normally the hardest part of doing anything, like a new chapter or adventure is the beginning. So what if Monday’s where the exact same………the start of something new!!

20170920_185418
A mess of a new adventure. Plus some tea for the nerve’s!

Here’s why I like looking at Monday a little differently now:

  • I can start the week the exact way I want to finish it. With amazing results and being very productive.
  • Remembering each day is a new day, don’t let a bad day ruin the rest of the week!!
  • A chance to re-vamp and re-evaluate any goals for that week or month.
  • Can decide what needs to be worked on that week. For example, blog, health, fitness, me time?
  • Focusing on a positive or strong mindset for that week. I’m in control, as the last week is exactly that…..the past.
  • Can decide on a new topic to learn or even focus on.

I love how even keeping a positive attitude has changed the last week. I’ve been asked how I do it by customers at work. My life is in my hands, I decide what happens and my attitude can have a huge impact on that. So I’d rather start my week off on the right foot and make that continue into the rest of the week.

Until next time my lovelies.

A Trio of Toggle Bracelet’s

Hello my lovelies. How are you all on a not so pleasant day? (Weather is horrid here!) Had a rare full day off so got my crafty mind going and made these little cuties.

Toggel bracelets that I made
The dark blue and brown was the first one I made and after seeing the end result, with its cute little light house charm. I decided to make more.

A close up of the lighthouse charm.
The first bracelet wasn’t without issues. First I had made it too long. Too many beads. And second I hadn’t closed the crimp bead properly so the wire was coming loose. After sorting these 2 problems I had a bracelet that fit well. (Still a little big but that’s okay for me!)

Blue spiked toggel bracelet with airplane charm.

My second creation. This one was a test of my patience. I kept having to redo it again and again cause I had too few beads. My first use of a big bead and while it is a little too big, its defo a keeper. Simply for the practice and colour combo.

Little airplane charm detail.
Third toggel bracelet! Success!!

My third attempt at the toggel bracelet. And I can happliy say success!! It fits snuggly on my wrist and looks great. By far my favourite piece. Love the little watermelon charm and the use of gold bracelet wire. Was going to use a dragonfly charm but think I’ll use it with a different colour combo.

Close up of the watermelon charm.
I’m off to enjoy more bracelet making.

Until next time lovelies.
